Wennerström Ljuskontroll AB Health Centre and water project
Support to doctor’s office “Wennerström Ljuskontroll AB Health Centre” in India

The Kjell Borneland Foundation, which Wennerström Ljuskontroll previously sponsored in their efforts to erect a medical centre in Nepal and with transports of ambulances to Morocco, is building a school, the Kjell Borneland Academy, in one of India’s most deprived areas. Wennerström Ljuskontroll once again offered a sponsorship contribution, which was be used to erect a building on the school campus which house a health centre. The centre have two rooms, one for examinations and the other for medical assistance (emergency room). If the conditions exist, the school building will also include a library and a future computer room.
”Wennerström Ljuskontroll AB Health Centre” in Jaigaon is the first of its kind as it is the only school in the Jaigaon and Jalpaiguri area which also has a health centre for poor inhabitants (both adult and children). The health centre provides free examinations of poor children and other poor patients in the area before a decision is reached to move the patient to another hospital in cases of severe injuries. The health centre also helps in cases of minor injuries and illnesses. In addition to medical first aid, the health centre also serve as the heart of the health awareness programme, aimed at spreading knowledge about sanitation and cleanliness to villagers in Jaigaon.

The development at the school is progressing and the number of students has increased to about 120. With improved facilities, the school is becoming more and more known in the area and has a good reputation.

You can also read an article about Kjell Borneland Academy from December 2018 in the Connecting Nations magazine.
October 2019
The number of pupils continues to increase, and is currently 145.
The school now has new buildings, nice paintings, bright classrooms, a library, green grassed areas, swings, toys and a school leadership team that takes good care of the pupils.
The pupils’ home environments look very different from their school environment. Poverty is widespread and indescribable in this part of India.

December 2019
Wennerström Health Centre was opened a year ago and they now have a nurse/school nurse on site three mornings a week. This is a unique benefit for the school’s students, teachers and students’ parents, who can get free help with general healthcare issues, advice and ‘small issues’ that would otherwise not be available. Healthcare in this part of India is extremely neglected.
A girls’ group has been started for girls at the school to provide information on puberty, etc.
Eye tests have also been carried out on all the school’s students in partnership with the local Lions Club (poster in photo). Poor sight was discovered in several students, and should be checked more thoroughly. For several years, we at Wennerström Ljuskontroll AB have been a major, much appreciated sponsor of the projects implemented at the Kjell Borneland Academy.

February 2022
The work at the school continues with the start off the new school year and for several of the students it was time for degree writing. At the same time, new children are starting school and a Welcome Week is being held for them.
With the new school year, the school is also expanded with a class 8, the highest class, where 4 students go. The hope is that it will be expanded with more children who can be recruited to the school.

March 2023
During the past year, the school’s health center “WLK Health Center” has been functioning very well and the school nurse Rangita Biswakarma keeps meticulous records of all the school’s students.
During this year, the goal is to arrange a school bus for the students. Several of the school children walk 1-2 hours every morning to get to and from school. The school management’s wishes is to get help with the purchase of a minibus with room for about 10 people. In addition to a trained driver for the bus, a teacher will always be present during the transports to ensure that everyone who is a student comes along, which provides security for parents and their children.
Doctor’s office. ”Wennerström Ljuskontroll AB Health Centre”
A doctor’s office has also been constructed. The new building consists of two floors, with new classrooms on the upper floor. The bottom floor house a doctor’s office with waiting room for school students, the students’ families, staff, and the villagers who have never before been able to afford to visit a doctor/nurse. All examinations is free of charge for students and teachers. Other individuals who live near the school can also visit the doctor’s office free of charge. Common injuries and illnesses among the villagers include snake bites (often fatal), malaria, pneumonia, cuts, dehydration, diabetes and other illnesses that require a doctor’s visit. An agreement has been signed with Anandalok Hospital in the town of Siliguri for more complicated illnesses.
Continued work with the school and the health center
With the help of a Swedish volunteer, a nurse who visits the school during November and December 2018, a health record can be applied as well as teenage talks with school children. The assistant principal at the school also receives instructions on how to weigh and measure the children. Two doctors from Jaigaon have promised to perform simple health examinations for students, teachers and students’ families free of charge, and to assist with advice and views.
In the school building there is also a school library fully equipped with furniture, literature and Ipads for study. The schoolyard has also been updated, which has led to the school now having Movement on the schedule where both students and teachers participate.

In 2019, support from WLK will be concentrated to healthcare materials, staffing and partly training of staff at the health center.
And during the first part of the year the school library has been expanded with reference literature, more sports articles have been acquired, play and teaching material for the “kindergarten” has been renewed.
The school has bought fire extinguishers and information signs for evacuation in the event of fire. Information and evacuation exercises have also been done.
At the school’s health center “Wennerström Health Center” the work continues with necessary health checks of the school’s students. When necessary, the school also receives visits from doctors, opticians and dentists who help pupils, teachers and students’ families free of charge.
The health center has also received more equipment. And eight water taps have been installed outside the toilets that were built last year and there are separate toilets for the school’s girls and boys.

During the pandemic years, the school nurse has visited the students in the homes to make sure that the students and parents survived.
The school staff as well as the students’ family members also have access to counseling and simpler treatments, which is an incredible asset for the small community of Chhota Mechiya Busty. During the year, vaccinations and eye examinations have been available at the “WLK Health Center” for all residents of the village.

Water project
Drilling of fresh water in the school area was completed in autumn 2016. The drilling went to a depth of 200 metres, where the glacier water from the Himalayas in Bhutan flow. The water project was long awaited and gives great pleasure to students, the students’ families and other villagers. With the completion of the water project in the beginning of 2017, when an electric pump was installed, pump house was completed, connections of water pipes and taps was arranged and water test was approved water could be released to the delight of pupils, teachers, parents of school children and local residents who never had fresh drinking water. More than 200 people now have access to fresh drinking water.
The project was made possible thanks to a private donation of Göran and Ewa Wennerström i Strängnäs.
