Comfort Hotel Winn, Umeå

Unique facade accent lighting in Umeå

Comfort Hotel Winn in Umeå has unique, dynamic facade lighting that stands out with its colours and effects. It contains a new type of LED technology that allows for a whole new spectrum of colours, including those not normally associated with LED and facade lighting, such as saturated colours. Naturally, the lighting also offers high-quality white light. The facade lighting can be varied according to the time and season, and can also incorporate photographs and films.

In Umeå, a new area spanning 55,000 square meters is being created in cooperation with Balticgruppen. The new area includes a new mall and the high-rise hotel Comfort Winn, which reaches 52 meters above sea level and opened its doors on 14 September of this year. When the hotel was created, Nordic Choice Hotels (its tenants) and Balticgruppen (its owners) wanted it to have unique and dynamic facade lighting – something beyond the ordinary. To achieve this, special lighting was developed in cooperation with feno (LED technology and control system) and lighting designers from Ljusrum. The installation was carried out by Grönlunds El in Nacka.

Facade lighting with special technology

The facade lighting consists of 550 luminaires with five channels per luminaire. They contain a new LED technology with unique colours and effects. The facade lighting contains five different types of LEDs, making it superior to the RGB mixture normally used. Instead of the standard three, an additional two colours can be used – opening up a whole new spectrum of colour. In addition to the unique shades of colour, the facade lighting offers high-quality white light with colour rendering of Ra>80. The colour temperature can be varied from warm white light at 1,700 K to daylight at 6,500 K.

The specially developed technology also includes innovative software that can be used to upload images or films, translate them in the luminaires and then display them on the facade. This makes it possible to use the artistic expression from a photo or painting to create facade lighting in the form of a sunrise or the northern lights, for example. The software and control system open up huge possibilities. The light sequences can be changed over the course of the day, adapted to suit the season, and even be controlled according to compass direction.
