The fluorescent guide – phasing out fluorescent tubes
In 2023, many common types of fluorescent light sources was phased out according to new environmental directives from the EU.
Which fluorescent tubes can no longer be used and what do you need to know? WLK guides you through the conversion of fluorescent tubes.
What is the goal with the phase out the fluorescent light sources?
The goal of phasing out the light sources is to reduce energy use and emissions of carbon dioxide from lighting products in the EU. The aim is also to promote sustainable development and to increase awareness of energy efficiency among consumers.
The ban on fluorescent tubes is based on two EU directives, the Ecodesign Directive and the RoHS Directive. The first sets minimum requirements for the energy performance of products, while RoHs regulates hazardous substances in electronics. It is RoHs that has decided that all light sources with mercury are now to be banned.
Which dates apply?
- Fluorescent tube T8 – 24 August 2023
- Fluorescent tube T5 – 24 August 2023
- Circular fluorescent tube T5 – February 24, 2023
- Compact fluorescent lamps without integrated operating devices – 24 February 2023
- Halogen lamps with sockets G9, G4 and GY6.35 – 1 September 2023
What options are there to replace the fluorescent tubes?
There are LED replacements for many light sources, but to get a more sustainable solution, it is better to rebuild the existing fixture by reusing the fixture chassis, reusing as much as possible and then using LED products. If, on the other hand, the luminaires are older and even if they are in poor condition, the recommendation is always to change to new LED luminaires, which are much more energy efficient.
WLK replaces the fluorescent tube’s driver for LED
Do you have light sources affected by the phase-out? Then you can replace the luminaire’s operating device and light sources with LEDs. WLK has good knowledge on the phasing out of fluorescent light sources and will be happy to help you update your fluorescent devices.
The easiest way is to use our Welight REFIT Sets and just exchange the components in the existing fluorescent luminaire to a complete LED solution. They work as an conversion kit for your old and outdated fluorescent luminaires.
We also offer OEM service where we custom build lighting solutions with LED profiles.
With an LED solution from us, you get a 5-year warranty. Contact us and we will tell you more.
We are experts in lighting control, and when you rebuild or replace the luminaire, lighting control should always be included to maximize energy savings. At WLK you will find both simple control solutions with just a push button as well as wired DALI solution or wireless via basicDIM Wireless.
We help fixture manufacturers, electrical installers and property owners to update their light sources
For us at WLK, sustainability and energy efficiency are important. The purpose of the EU’s phasing out of light sources is to take the next step for more environmentally friendly lighting.
